Monday Commute

009

Early morning in the restaurant.

Yesterday after church I went up to my parent’s house. I made tacos and then my dad and I did some maintenance stuff on my bike. My mom offered to spread some old blankets over the living room floor so I was able to hang out with my brothers while cleaning my bike. (They stole my laptop to watch America’s Got Talent youtube clips on the couch.)

We took apart the front wheel and I learned about cone wrenches, jam nuts and the 20 little bearings that make my wheel spin. Once I finished cleaning all the pieces I put it back together with a little coaching from my dad. He will make a bike mechanic out of me yet!

My view of daylight savings time in the fall:
“Yay, one more hour to sleep tonight!”

My view of daylight savings time in the spring:
An evil government conspiracy to make us believe they can control time.

I made the mistake of not putting all my clocks forward so this morning when I woke up the clock on the stove read 1:55. Mentally, that was pretty disheartening. So I changed the time and instantly felt slightly more energetic. That is a lie, changing a stove clock does not create energy.

But do you know what does make me more energetic? Getting out on the road and being under the light of a smiling moon. It was unbelievably warm out and it felt so good to have the wind blowing against my face.

As soon as the sun came up, we tipped over into above freezing temperatures! Oddly enough, even though the weather was so warm outside, the frost is so deep that the town I work in has a frozen pipe advisory.

First sign of spring: bare roads.

The ride home was beautiful, bright and warm. What more can I ask for?

  1. Good for you. I know too few women interested in bike maintenance. Your wheel hobs and bottom bracket need regular servicing in the kind of weather you are riding in. πŸ™‚

  2. Servicing loose ball hubs makes me dream of the day I’ll move to cartridge bearing wheels. It’s fun gettin’ your hands dirty, though. Kudos!

    • It was fun to take the wheel apart and see how everything fit together. When I got up in the morning to go to work, I realized that I still had some grease on my elbow πŸ˜‰

  3. Yikes. I still take my bike to the shop for any bearing work. But I have a couple of 40-mph sections on my commute; I don’t want anything getting loose or seizing up while I’m barreling down the shoulder of the freeway…

  4. I enjoy riding my bicycle, I do it as much as I can, but for me it is about 98 percent pleasure riding. I have wanted for years to commute with it, and might do it a handful of times, but i seem to fall back on the car pretty quick using the because I have to ________ fill in the blank. I work for a large corporation, and somehow using a bike to get to work makes me feel like i am not working, I don’t know, it’s how I am wired.

You get the 5 Star award for awesome, by using your bike for work, and you are so positive about it, and pretty much everything. Please keep writing, not to put any pressure on you.. but it helps me.

I do agree about early morning riding… it’s so quiet, tends to be windless and everything is there for you to see (yes, in the dark), as your not focused on cars.

Looking forward to hear how you cope during black fly season.

    • Thanks for taking the time to comment, Steve!
I agree with you, using my bike as transportation adds something intangible to my days at work. Maybe it is the adventure, the exercise, the quiet time of reflection, the beauty of being outdoors or all of those factors combined. Biking just has a way of making the day special.
Good luck to you on your bike commuting!
(Bumblebees are my personal nemesis in the nice weather, they are always getting into my clothes or crash landing on my nose. And those swarms of tiny little bugs, I think they are called midges, those really love me.)
